Black Star Pastry – Sydney, New South Wales, Australia – 22 November 2018 – home of the famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake

I used to travel from Melbourne to Sydney for work every now and then. Each time I visited Sydney, I was lucky to be in the CBD and would always visit Black Star Pastry – a famous cafe that serves delicious cakes and treat. Most of all, they sell the famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake for AUD$8.

Black Star Pastry is situated within the Japanese book store Kinokuniya. It’s a great place to relax. You can grab a book and sit down with a slice of cake and coffee.

Each time I visit, I visit during the weekdays and it’s always busy during lunch hours. There is always a queue. I fondly remember the lovely sweet aromas coming from the cafe and the excitement of fellow queuers. Every now and then there is a photo being taken of this famous cafe and it’s cakes.

I have now tried most of their cakes, but the two that I really like are the Strawberry Watermelon Cake and the Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake (AUD$8). The hard watermelon layer in the Strawberry Watermelon Cake gives the cake a nice texture and the jelly on top is just the icing on the cake. While the Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake had a nice lemon zest cream and the layers were deliciously soft and moist.

There are other things on offer as well from Custard Flans to Orange Cakes. The prices are all reasonable.

I recommend coming with friends so that you can grab a nice photo with the insta-worthy food and talk over good food. Plus, I love good book stores and wondering Kinokuniya is heaps of fun.

If you want to take the cakes home, they provide a really cool decorated box with an ice pack. The box and ice pack kept the cakes well, even on the plane from Sydney to Melbourne. I would always bring the cakes back to my wife back in Melbourne.

Since visiting in November 2018, there is now a Black Star Pastry in St Kilda in Melbourne, but I haven’t had the chance to visit since the pandemic started.

Black Star Pastry is located here: Books Kinokuniya, Level 2 The Galeries, Sydney, New South Wales 2000, Australia:
