I’ve said it before. South Melbourne is packed with some incredible places to visit, including the famous, iconic South Melbourne Market and many other established restaurants, unique stores and a great local buzz. The South Melbourne Market is home to some incredible food, delis and specialty goods. (I also sometimes come to pick up groceries and some cheap end-of-day fruit and vegetables.) You can also find the famous South Melbourne Dim Sims, Simply Spanish Paella, Gozleme, French pastries and oysters.
If you want cheap, delicious and hearty food, you ought to visit Borek in the food court at the back of the market.
There is usually a fast moving, long line of people waiting to pick up this delicious bread with filling. It is only AUD$4 and you can choose from the following flavors Spicy Lamb, Cheese and Spinach, Spicy Potato and Plain. My favorite is the Cheese and Spinach one, it’s got a nice oozy, cheesy texture with a tartness to it.
For me, I think one borek is enough. It is very filling and satisfying. But if you want more than one, it’s worth sharing two with your better half.
If borek is not your thing, there are heaps of other breads to choose from such as pita bread with filling, zucchini patties and falafel rolls. It’s all really good. You can order quite a bit for under $10.
You can reach the South Melbourne Market by taking the route 96 tram and route 12 (but route 12 requires some walking). Borek at South Melbourne Market is located at 322 Coventry St, South Melbourne VIC 3205:
